Toronto Photography


Photography, a word that was derived from the Greek words, “photos” meaning light and “graphein” meaning to draw. The word photography was first use in 1839 by Sir John Herschel.

Whilst Herschel was the first to use the term photography first in a lecture before the Royal Society in March of 1839, scholars believed that an anonymous writer with the initials "J.M." was the first to use the term. Eventually it was determine that this anonymous writer was Johann von Maedler. Maedler was an astronomer from Berlin. However, Sir John Hershel was the person who made the word "photography" known to the world

There are two processes that when combine make photography possible.

The first of which was optical. The Camera Obscura also referred to as a dark room. The camera obscura used as an aid to drawing at this period in time. There is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, dated 1519, of a Camera Obscura. The second process was chemical.

There was a time, not so very long ago that painters feared photography would cause the art of oil painting to become extinct. However, photography has survived that test of time and proven itself as a viable art form, in conjunction with the art of oil painting.
